Michael I the Syrian

Author (died 1199) of the most important Syriac world chronicle (q.v.), which describes events from the Creation to 1195; Jacobite patriarch of Antioch (qq.v.). The chronicle preserves lost Syriac sources, in addition to extant ones, e.g., John of Ephesus and (pseudo-) Dionysios of Tell Mahre (qq.v.). For the 12th century the Chronicle is particularly important for Byzantine relations with the Crusader states.
